When Memories Snow s’inscrit dans une recherche autour de la manière de mettre en lumière les dimensions narratives, poétiques, émotionnelles, ou engagées de la chanson, à l’aide du texte. Basé sur le travail de l’artiste Mitski, cet ouvrage n’est pas un lyricbook qu’on retrouve dans certains albums CD ou vinyles, mais un objet éditorial à part entière, similaire à un recueil de poème.

Une lecture apportée par le texte de base, son dernier album, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We, ponctué de rappels des six albums qui le précèdent. Avec l’aide du text mining, l’analyse de texte par ordinateur qui permet de faire émerger des schémas significatifs, une manière d’utiliser les mathématiques comme base objective (en tous cas, aussi objectif que la science puisse l’être) pour créer un objet sensible, qui raconte, à l’aide des mots de l’artiste et rien d’autre, l’histoire de Mitski, et élargit le cadre pour raconter aussi les histoires des gens qui s’identifient à ses textes, moi y compris.

When Memories Snow is the result of research into how to highlight the narrative, poetic, emotional or political dimensions of song, using only text. Based on the work of artist Mitski, this book is not a lyricbook as found in some CD or vinyl albums, but a fully-fledged editorial object, similar to a collection of poems.

A narrative provided by the base text, her latest album, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We, punctuated by reminders of the six albums that precede it. Using text mining, a computer analysis of text that allows significant patterns to emerge, a way of using mathematics as an objective base (in any case, as objective as science can be) to create a sensible object, which tells, using the artist's words and nothing else, Mitski's story, and expands the picture to also tell the stories of the people who identify with her lyrics, myself included.
